Foxconn Interconnect Technology (FIT), the Hyderabad-based manufacturing arm of Foxconn, is undertaking a major expansion of its AirPods production operations in Telangana, India. The company plans to double monthly output to approximately 200,000 AirPods units, up from over 100,000 currently, and increase the workforce to about 5,000 employees within the next six to eight months.

Investment & Capacity Details

  • The Hyderabad plant (located at Kongara Kalan, around 15 km from Hyderabad Airport) began commercial AirPods production in April 2025.
  • Foxconn has committed to a total investment of approximately ₹4,800 crore (~US$ 550 million) for this facility’s expansion. More than ₹3,000 crore has already been deployed.
  • The expansion will involve revamping five existing production lines and transferring machinery from Foxconn’s Vietnam facilities, plus one or two new lines for the latest AirPods models (including AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3).

Strategic Context

This ramp-up aligns with both Apple’s and Foxconn’s broader strategy of diversifying manufacturing away from China and scaling up production in India. The report notes that Apple’s India exports are growing rapidly — for example, iPhones exported from India hit a record US$10 billion in the first half of FY26, up 75% year-over-year.

India’s manufacturing ecosystem is being positioned as a key export hub for Apple accessories, and Foxconn’s expansion is a clear indicator of this shift.

Implications

  • For India: The increased production and employment boost (up to 5,000 new jobs) will contribute significantly to local economic development in Telangana and India’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem.
  • For Apple and Supply Chain: Doubling production capacity in India helps mitigate risks, meet global demand, and integrate manufacturing closer to export hubs for the U.S. and Europe.
  • For Foxconn: The move strengthens its India footprint and reinforces its role as a major manufacturer for Apple accessories, not just iPhones.
  • For the Market: As AirPods continue to be a major segment in wearable audio devices globally, increasing production capacity helps meet demand, especially as newer models enter the market.

Considerations

  • The expansion timeline is six to eight months for the full ramp-up to 200,000 units/month, so projects for early 2026 are likely to reflect higher output.
  • The report highlights prior production constraints at the facility due to rare-earth material shortages (dysprosium) tied to China’s export controls. These supply chain risks remain relevant.
  • While this part of Apple’s accessory manufacturing moves to India, component sourcing and tooling still involve complex global supply chains, so continuous investment and ecosystem development are essential.

📌 Quick Takeaway

Foxconn’s decision to double AirPods manufacturing in India signals a significant shift: India is now firmly part of Apple’s global accessory production strategy. With nearly 200,000 units/month capacity expected, a ₹4,800 crore investment and thousands of new jobs, the Hyderabad facility stands as a major milestone in India’s electronics manufacturing journey.
